The Garnet Behind the Resume

Hi! I’m Amber, the founder of Garnet Resumes.

After working full-time as a resume writer and digital career strategist for four years, guiding hundreds of clients across industries and career stages, I chose to take on a new challenge and begin a career in a different industry. However, I knew I couldn’t fully leave resume writing behind. Even though my career was moving in a different direction, I could not ignore my instinct to educate others on how to stand out during their job search.

I created Garnet Resumes in 2025 because I wanted to continue delivering strategic career storytelling services and being a champion for my clients, teaching them how to navigate their job search and market themselves with confidence.

I chose the name “Garnet Resumes” because the garnet is my birthstone, the state gemstone of New York (see The Excelsior package), and the gemstone used by royalty for centuries when sealing important documents. When you work with me on your resume, I capture your strengths, wins, and individuality with a sophistication geared to catch and hold a reader’s attention. With my own “garnet seal,” I will equip you with the tools necessary navigate one of life’s most important transitions.

My Approach & Values

Everyone deserves the chance to tell their story.

“I don’t know” is one of the most common phrases I hear while working with clients. The full sentence is usually “I don’t know where to start,” “I don’t know what matters,” or “I don’t know how to show the value of what I’ve done.”

But I do.

When you work with me, I do not just write your resume, I help you relearn your own career and teach you how to extract value and impact from things you might have previously overlooked. Together we create a career narrative that highlights your growth, influence, and potential— and speaks directly to what hiring teams are looking for.

Furthermore, no two stories are the same, and I believe each client deserves a resume developed with the nuances of their life, skills, and experiences in mind. I am committed to creating every document from scratch for each client, without the influence of generative AI.

However, I also recognize that AI is now an inevitable part of the job search, and it is my responsibility to monitor these developments (e.g., ATS compliance) so I can stay at the forefront of innovation and pass my knowledge on to my clients.

FAQs

What is a resume?

A resume is not a just a list of every job you’ve ever had. It is a strategic narrative of your career, built to highlight your skills, knowledge, and experience while also positioning you for next role. It is your talents, responsibilities, challenges, and wins all on one page. It is a marketing tool, and you are the core product.

Why should I hire a resume writer?

Everyone needs a resume. Knowing how to showcase your value is one of the most impactful decisions you can make for your career. If you are confident in your ability to craft and update your own resume, and you are seeing results in your job search, that’s great! You probably don’t need to hire a resume writer.

But if you aren’t happy with your resume, don’t have the time to write or update one, and are frustrated with the results of your job search, it might be time to reach out to a professional for guidance.

Do you guarantee a job offer in a certain amount of time?

No, and you should be wary of any service that claims to do so. There are too many factors outside of your (and my) control in the hiring process for anyone to ever confidently guarantee a job offer from a resume.

Today’s job seekers operate with a less than 5% interview rate, receiving an average of 2-4 interviews per 100 applications sent. With a tailored resume and application strategy, job seekers can often increase this to about a 10% interview rate, depending on their experience and industry.

Ultimately, the purpose of a resume is to get you noticed. Once you secure an interview, the resume’s job is done. The rest is up to you.

Do you specialize in certain industries?

I have worked with clients across many industries, backgrounds, and seniority levels. Though I do not specialize in any particular industry, but I have found that the majority of my clients fall into one of three groups:

  • New or recent graduates (less than two years of experience)

  • Parents or caregivers returning to the workforce after an extended absence

  • Professionals who have spent the majority of their careers at the same organization and have not updated their resume in over five years

If you fit into one of these categories, working with a trained resume writer is a great way to create a strategic narrative that captures the nuance of your experience and positions you to take your next step with confidence.

How can my resume get through all the Applicant Tracking Systems out there?

The truth about Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) is that they are no more than a digital filing cabinet used to sort, store, and (sometimes) score applications.

When you submit an application, the first thing an ATS does is scan your resume. It looks for the basics: contact info, experience, and education. Then it parses this content to find whatever it was programmed to— sometimes this is keywords, or years of experience, or even specific titles. It might rank your application against others based on this criteria.

Guess what? Human hiring teams do the same thing. The ATS just makes their jobs easier.

The key to passing the ATS inspection is simplicity. Proper formatting, common section titles, and clear, value-driven content. If the ATS cannot find some or all of the data it is supposed to, it might flag or even discard your application. Just like a human would.
